No 14 - To sample all ales brewed in West Sussex

So here it is. The list of all the West Sussex Ales I plan to sample during 2015. A tall order but we'll see how we go. Planning on The Sussex Beer Festival in Brighton 20th/21st March to tick off  a good few.

List amended on 8th March as I had neglected to include the Dark Star ales, some of which I have already sampled.

Ballard's	Midhurst Mild		Core	3.7	Traditional mahogany brown mild, smoky, roasted nutty aroma, with sweet, molasses and dark chocolate flavours. Brewed with Pale Ale, Crystal & Chocolate Malts and Fuggle Hops.
Ballard's	Golden Bine		Core	3.8	A lovely golden yellow beer with floral lemon fragrance and soft citrus flavours and a sharp dry finish. Brewed with Pearl malt and a touch of wheat, combined with Golding and Fuggle hops.

Ballard's	Nyewood Gold		Core	5.0	"Auburn bronze Premium ale with malty barley sugar and spicy hop aromas and a smooth creamy flavour with soft fruits throughout with a tasty balanced finish. Originally brewed for the Beauty of Hops Competition 1997 to trial Phoenix hops, a new variety developed to be resistant to Wilt, the disease which has decimated English Hop Gardens.
Ballard's	Wassail		Core	6.0	A strong chestnut ruby Premium ale with an oaky aroma containing sherry and mature fruit. The flavour is warming, fruity and strong. At 6.0% it is considered by CAMRA to be a Barley Wine, but its characteristics are more those of a strong “Winter Warmer” style bitter.

Langham	Hip Hop		Core	4.0	Exactly what it says on the clip. Following in the modern tradition of blonde strongly hopped beers. A classic blonde beer — clean and crisp. The nose is loaded with floral hop aroma while the pale malt flavour is overtaken by a pleasing dry and bitter finish.

Langham	Sundowner		Core	4.2	“An alcoholic drink taken at sunset” OED. Truly a great beer to sup of a summer’s eve. A deep, golden beer. The nose has tropical fruit, pineapple and citrus notes with a smooth maltiness in the background. There is a balanced dry & bitter finish with floral hop aroma.
Langham	Best Bitter		Core	4.5	A tawny-coloured classic best beer with well-balanced malt flavours, finished with a hint of blackcurrant and a slightly spicy, sweet aroma.
Langham	Longhand Special Draft		Core	5.2	An auburn beer with rich complex flavours and a deep red glow. The sweet maltiness is balanced with spicy hop aromas and a dry finish. Definitely a pint to savour. Also available in bottles.

Adur	HOP TOKEN: CITRA		Core	4.0	An amber-coloured bitter showcasing the Citra hop. With zest of lime, citrus & tropical fruits: peach, apricot, passion fruit, lychee, pineapple, papaya & mango - a veritable fruit salad, with notes of toffee and malt - giving a long finish.
Adur	HOP TOKEN: SUMMIT		Core	4.0	An amber-coloured bitter showcasing the Summit hop. The aroma includes hints of tangerine orange and grapefruit carrying over into the taste which, including notes of toffee and malt leads to a long bitter finish
Adur	VELOCITY		Core	4.4	A traditional English bitter with a fresh flavour at the lower end of the bitterness scale. We add a handful of the ruinously expensive German Hallertauer hops just before the beer is fermented and the result has excellent aroma and just a hint of an old-fashioned marmalade.
Adur	BLACK WILLIAM		Core	5.0	A rich black coloured stout with a creamy head. Powered by Target hops, it is in the middle of the bitterness scale and contains a very high proportion of chocolate malt that contributes to the dark chocolate aroma and roasted flavours.
Adur	ROBBIE'S RED		Core	5.2	A strong red-brown ale. Slight initial sweetness leads to complex flavours including smoky orange peel and a satisfying bitterness persists into a long finish.
Adur	HAPPY EVER AFTER		Core	5.2	A celebration ale originally brewed for the Royal Wedding of Prince William and Kate Middleton which took place on Friday April 29th 2011. Happy Ever After is an intensely hoppy bitter with a hint of Seville oranges leading to a long herbal finish.
Adur	STEYNING SPECIAL		Core	5.5	Steyning Special is a strong, slightly spicy and lightly hopped ale reminiscent of those of the Edwardian era. It has a bitterness characteristic of English ales, leading to a long finish.
Adur	MERRY ANDREW		Core	6.2	A dark strong ale with a creamy head. Initial sweetness with hints of chocolate are balanced by a drier middle and end. It is available from September to March on draught and is available in bottles throughout the year. Baseline	Decibel DnB - Dark n Black Hop Ale		Seasonal	5.3	A hit of Dark Fruit followed by a rich well balanced roasted malt finish. We use over 5kg of fresh whole leaf hops to make Decibel. It’s musically inspired Ale. Will a staccato hit of complex dark fruit with a hint of spice and citrus. Complimented by a rolling reggae bassline of Roasted Malt.
Baseline	Dark Matter - Dark Ale		Core	5.5	A dark, full bodied Ale. Not as dark or roasted as a stout or a porter, but with a complex grain bill sure to tantalise your taste buds. The initial flavour is roasted malt with spicy floral hops and a fruity but dry bitter finish. Lashings of Chocolate Malt mean this beer improves with age but as always is well conditioned before leaving the brewery. This beer contains a generous amount of Wheat Malt which gives excellent head when served in good condition. In terms of comparisons our brewer thinks this beer has similarities to Riggwelter from Black Sheep
Baseline	English Electric Lightning		Seasonal	6.0	English Electric Lightning will celebrate not only the English Special Bitter style, but also one of the truly magnificent feats of British Engineering. The English Electric Lightning was our very own Mach 2 Cold War Interceptor which still even in 2012 holds many time to altitude records. A Classic English Special Bitter Style using Maris Otter Pale, Crystal & Amber Malt. Half of this is provided by late hops. The Hops used are Challenger & Pioneer. A burnished orange colour like a Lightning engine on reheat. This beer has a pleasant citrus/fruity & floral hop aroma. A rich biscuity malt flavour with a combination of flavours from the hops. Hints of seville orange, citrus and fruitcake.
Baseline	Halcyon Hop Haze		Core	4.0	New improved receipe with a small addition of Carapils for better head and revised hopping strategy costing twice as much but packing much more of those aromatic essential hop oils that hopheads love. A straw coloured Pale Ale with a simple grain bill. Mainly Warminster Maris Otter Pale Malt. This beer uses one hop variety the American Chinook. In days gone by this hop would have only been considered suitable for bittering purposes. However tastes have changed and Chinook is now very popular as an Aroma hop. Considerable amounts of dry hopping give this beer a very slight natural haze (it is also unfined). The hops give plenty of aroma and a spicy, resinous, grapefruit flavour. The malt being such high quality as we expect from Warminster compliments this hoppy beer very well.
Baseline	Best Bitter		Core	4.5	Most breweries offer a Best Bitter so we thought it time we joined the bandwagon. We think this is a beautifully balanced beer, using British Malt and Hops with a little Carapils for a better head. Mainly Maris Otter with a little Crystal this beer has a lovely bisuity malt flavour with a nicely aromatic hoppy nose and flavour. The hops used give the beer a nice combination of zesty citrus with notes of candied fruit. Recently revised to 4.5% from 4 and slightly more bitter. An even better Best!
Baseline	Rebel Alliance IPA		Seasonal	6.5	A “proper” IPA at 6.5% ABV this beer recalls the alliance between the Mughal Empire and rebels from the British East India Company, in the first Indian Uprising of 1857. The end result of the rebellion was the disbanding of the Mughal Empire as well as the East India Company, and the establishment of the Raj. An alliance of British Hops (Admiral) and American (Cascade & Chinook) combine to make this delectable beer the perfect compliment to Indian food or on its own.
Baseline	Englander Weissbier		Seasonal	4.0	German by name but English by nature. This beer doesn’t comply with Berliner Weisse wheat content, nor does it taste like your typical Wheat Beer. This beer is an original English take on a German style. Using just Maris Otter Pale and Wheat Malt from Warminster together with Cascade (UK if we can get it or the US version) and Admiral Hops we’ve created a very refreshing session beer. More heavily hopped than a traditional Wheat Beer we layer the hops to maximise the nose and flavour of both varieties. Floral and Fruit nose and flavour with more citrus than a typical wheat beer.
Baseline	Sussex Subwoofer Stout		Seasonal	5.0	A modern take on a classic. Using the Admiral Hop from the UK. This hop has a pungent resinous, orangey, citrus aroma in the rub. It’s the perfect compliment to the Dark Roasted barley together with Chocolate Amber & Wheat Malt.
Baseline	Flying Fortress IPA		Seasonal	9.0	A very big beer that is matured for 6 months before release. Available only in very limited quantities, once per annum, this is one to look out for. A complex beer with Maris Otter Pale, Crystal, Wheat & Amber Malt. Hop backbone is from Pioneer & Chinook. Dry Hopping in two stages with Pioneer & Chinook Hops.
Baseline	Mash Up		Seasonal	4.0	Beer is something of a religion in the Czech republic and they invented the most copied style of beer in the world with Pilsen. Back to the UK, and we, of course are kings of our very own style - Real Ale - that is something uniquely British. Mash Up fuses the two styles together. We take a combination of finest Bohemian Malt and Czech grown hops and marry them with Britains finest Malt - Maris Otter and one of the classic British Hops, First Gold. The result is a pale, zesty refreshing beer with a balanced malt profile combining perfectly the delicate Bohemian Malt with the Biscuity Maris Otter. The bitterness is sharp and refreshing and moreish with Citrus, Spice and Orange with some herbal notes from the Czech hops.
Baseline	Bad Code		Seasonal	4.5	Inspired by completing an Ecommerce project and realising that modern e-commerce software is now so complex and cumbersome that you need as ever more and powerful hardware to run it on. Back in 1983 Jetpac (play it here in your browser - cursor keys & space bar) on the ZX Spectrum ran within 16KB. Nowadays, even Adobe reader, which as far as I know just reads documents, is 135MB (that’s 138,240KB). The world is so wasteful on so many levels that even efficient coding is a thing of the past. This beer is a celebration of a piece of simple but bad code, but is a banging beer. Using a combination of new world and old world hops from USA, UK and Europe this Fruity pale is the perfect antidote to the wasteful world we live in. Made with less energy and less waste water than most breweries the only thing to bear in mind is not to take the code too literally...
Baseline	Gold Admiral		Core	4.9	A simple recipe of Maris Otter Pale Malt, with some wheat malt for a lasting head and glass lacing. Combined with First Gold and Admiral Hops from Sussex and Sussex Chalk Filtered water and you have a classic sessionable 4.9% Golden English Pale Ale. Hop Descriptions - First Gold: "Flavour and Aroma It has a wonderful tangerine, sweet orangey citrus aroma and slender spicy notes. Its flavours are of marmalade, geranium, magnolia, sweet and floral." Admiral: "Flavour and Aroma. Admiral has excellent highflavour notes which are orangery, citrus and herbal." 100% British Hops & Malt & Sussex Chalk Filtered Water

Named in honour of the founder of the original Hurst Brewery, George Thomas Saltmarsh, this ale links the past, present, and future eras of brewing in Hurstpierpoint. Founder's Best Bitter is a rich, dark amber hue, with a rounded malty palate. It is suffused with subtle caramel and orange flavours.
Hurst	Keeper's Gold		Core	4.4	Keeper's Gold is a smooth, burnished golden ale with a buoyant aroma of grapefruit, citrus, and spice. Its unmistakeable hoppy notes are finely balanced with a simple, yet effective, malt profile, and a subtle infusion of South Downs honey. Keeper's Gold is brewed in celebration of the long history of apiculture (bee-keeping) along the foot of the South Downs. Local beekeeper, Phillip O'Connell, provides the honey that is delicately folded into each brew. It is he who appears on the Keeper's Gold pump clip, tending to one of his hives.
Hurst	Oldland Sussex Pale Ale		Core	3.7	Oldland, a coppery pale ale, is an all-year round session beer which doesn't compromise on flavour or integrity. It is made from a rich and complex malt recipe, imbuing a nutty and biscuity depth, over which floats an understated, earthy and spicy hop aroma. It is a balanced ale whose flavours complement each other harmoniously, with no one aspect dominating the others. The name, Oldland, refers to the 18th Century working windmill in Keymer, West Sussex, whose volunteers received the English Heritage Angel Award in 2014 for their tireless efforts in restoring this magnificent landmark - a process which took almost 30 years! Our Sussex Pale Ale is brewed as our own homage to them, for revitalising this historic marvel of local engineering.
Hurst	Watchtower		Core	5.5	Starting life as a seasonal ale, called Winter Watchtower, this Black London Porter is now available all year round. It is a strong, dark beer with a distinctive, earthy bitterness, created by intensely roasted malted barleys and traditional English hops. These flavours are complemented by a warming late-hop profile, characterised by winter spice and resinous wood, all topped-off with a rich, coffee-coloured head which exhibits excellent retention. Our Watchtower celebrates a well known Hurstpierpoint landmark - the imposing flint folly known locally as Tower House - and it is this historic circular tower, built in 1826 (and boasting English Heritage Grade 2 status), that features on the pump clip.
Hurst	Summer 700		Seasonal	3.7	Summer 700 is the ale with which we launched our brewery back in 2012. It was initially brewed to mark the 700th anniversary of Edward 11 granting a charter for the village's annual St Lawrence fair, one of the longest established village fairs in the country. Summer 700 is a classic, hoppy, blonde ale - the perfect session beer, boasting light floral and herbal notes and a satisfying mouthfeel. A definite thirst-quencher on a hot summer's day!

Kissingate	Nooksack American Pale Ale		Occasional	5.0	Back in February 2014 we teamed up with our good friends at Twickenham brewery and created the Nooksack APA. We used four different varieties of hops from Washington State in order to create a big American Pale Ale. The indiginous people of this North West American State inspired the name 'Nooksack'. Our collaboration produced an outstanding beer which went on to win the 2014 Sussex Beer Festival. Next re-brew at Twickenham Brewery is scheduled for July 2015.
